Welcome
to the third instalment of our District Series! Today we bring to you the
beautiful district of Mongar, which borders the beginning of eastern Bhutan
in the northern portion of the ancient region of Khyeng. As one of the fastest developing
Dzongkhag in eastern Bhutan, the region is known for its textiles and fabrics which
are considered the best in the country, as seen in Made in Bhutan. Due to its
location, Mongar has a very pleasant and interesting countryside, laced with traditional
Bhutanese architecture, painted wooden houses, and colourful potted plants. The landscape is spectacular with stark cliffs and
deep gorges set amidst dense forests (Tourism Bhutan). If you are into sights, Mongar is definitely a district to
see with amazing views and beautiful nature, including Thrumshingla National
Park and the Bumdeling Wildlife Sanctuary.

special feature of Mongar is the small rural town of Yadi, a two days’ drive

Bhutan a landscape isn't something just to look at and walk through every now

In 2005, photojournalists Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio published Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, a book documenting the weeklong diets of 30 families across the globe, from Bhutan and Bosnia to Mexico and Mongolia. Menzel and D'Aluisio followed each family through the whole process, showing where they got their food and how they got it, what they liked to eat, and how much it cost.
While in Bhutan, they visited the Namgay family of Shingkhey Village in Wangdue Phodrang. During that week, the family grocery bill was 224.93 ngultrum or $5.03USD (in 2005).
Their family recipe? Mushroom, cheese, and pork. ...and of course, plenty of chillies!
Bhutan’s progression from an absolute monarchy to a parliamentary democracy beginning
in 2008. Following the 2008 parliamentary election, Bhutan is one of the

This being Bhutan, they all immediately stopped work and offered to not only show me where to swim but also go swimming with me. We walked through a few more dry paddy fields through a small wooded area over some rocks to a part of the river that had formed a natural pool. On the far side of this natural swimming pool was a sheer cliff a few hundred meters high, up and down river the water cascaded over boulders.

Today, we're proud to present one of the national symbols of Bhutan.

The National Flag is divided diagonally into two equal halves. The upper yellow half signifies the secular power and authority of the King while the lower saffron-orange symbolizes the practice of religion and the power of Buddhism, manifested in the tradition of Drukpa Kagyu. The dragon signifies the name and the purity of the country while the jewels in its jewelled claws stand for the wealth and perfection of the country.
Today is the first installment of our “Spotlight on
Districts” series, in which we will be delving into the unique and special
qualities of Bhutan’s Dzongkhags. With recruitment nearing for 2014 teacher placements,
we thought it would be informative to give our future teachers a look into
possible areas they could be teaching, highlighting features of specific
districts along with stories from past teachers in that area.
This week’s district is the Trashigang Dzongkhag
in the heart of Eastern Bhutan. This remote region is at the foot of steep
wooded valleys and is one of the largest Dzongkhag in the country, having the
densest population in Bhutan. The main market of Trashigang is home to a
handsome collection of shops, bars, hotels and small restaurants. The climate
is warm and equitable, and the area is rich in tropical crops and fruits in
which locals are dependent on these agricultural activities for their
livelihood. Trashigang is home of the protected Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary,
which was created to protect the Migoi, or more commonly the Bhutanese
From April 1st to April 10th, Sam Blyth, the Chair of the Bhutan Canada Foundation visited Bhutan with a small group of BCF supporters on his annual "Chairman's Trip." It was a great week starting with a very special dinner in Paro, Bhutan that was attended by a number of important guests. It may have been the largest gathering of Canadians ever in the Himalayan Kingdom as the BCF group combined with a group of people that Dr. David Suzuki was leading from the Suzuki Foundation. At the dinner Dr. Suzuki, who has been appointed to Bhutan's expert working group on the " the New Development Paradigm", spoke about Bhutan's philosophy of Gross National Happiness and the important message it has for the world.

Later in the week the group visited the Bhutan Canada Foundation office in Thimphu and were then hosted by the Minister of Education for a delicious traditional Bhutanese meal. As the current government has completed its term and the next elections are around the corner, Mr. Blyth took the opportunity to thank the Minister for his support and assistance in establishing this very successful and worthwhile collaboration and congratulated the Minister and his government on the great progress that was made in the education sector during their five year term. Likewise, the Minister thanked the Bhutan Canada Foundation for its hard work in not only maintaining the Bhutan - Canada link in the crucial area of education but in finding wonderful teachers from around the world that are truly making a difference across the Kingdom.

The group then went to field to visit schools, meet BCF teachers and enjoyed the beauty of spring in the Himalayas. They then flew back from Bumthang to Paro and climbed up to the famous Taksang Lhakang for a final blessing before they departed Bhutan.

As a throwback to last week's 1st annual International Day of Happiness, we're happy to share BCF teacher Heather's experience of March 20th, declared a National Holiday in Bhutan. Heather's day of happy turned out to be a day of sports, shopping, cooking; and of course like any busy and passionate teacher, lots of reading and marking.

"The female teachers were playing basketball against the girl captains for fun. I went out to watch and actually played. Me. Basketball. Probably my least favourite game. I had a riot racing up and down the court. I actually scored a basket - almost a 3 pointer actually. The ball just floated into the basket. If there are assists in basketball I had a few of those. Imagine me, Heather Robertson, dribbling up the court and passing to Kelzang who pops it into the hoop. Yup. Me. More than once."

The Kingdom of Bhutan will go to polls for the second time in its history next month for elections which will consolidate its transformation to democracy, according to a royal decree. Five years ago, the remote Himalayan state of Bhutan turned from an absolute to a constitutional monarchy, making it one of the youngest democracies in the world.

King
Jigme Dorji Wangchuck took the first steps towards democratization by setting
up a 130-member National Assembly in 1953. His son and successor Jigme Singye
Wangchuck further handed over powers in 1998 when he took steps to rule Bhutan
in conjunction with the National Assembly as well as the Council of Cabinet
Ministers.

He followed that up by setting in motion the drafting of a
constitution in 2001. King Jigme Singye Wangchuck abdicated voluntarily in 2006
in favor of his son, Jigme Khesar Namgyel and Bhutan held its first vote in 2008 after its
royal family opted to peacefully transition the country into a constitutional
monarchy, which saw a turnout of nearly 80%.

Today’s blog of the week comes from Tim Grossman, a current teacher in the field who has been placed at
Tshenkherla Middle Secondary School in Trashiyangtse.
In his blog, Tim reflects on his teaching experience thus far in Bhutan,
mentioning the different challenges associated with educational philosophy in
Bhutan and their community based culture.
I am focused on life in the classroom,
assessing my new students who have transferred in from schools as far as
Thimphu or as near as Kinney. I notice a contrast in demeanour between my
students from last year and the newcomers. I expect students to speak in class
but often the newcomers are reticent and shy about speaking; this is a
challenge that all BCF teachers face. There are genuine cultural gaps and some
of these differences manifest themselves in education philosophy.

It's a great day to be happy!

Bhutan helped to usher in the pursuit of happiness and the importance of using a holistic measure to success both at the United Nations and with several key policy makers around the world. This idea continues to build great ground and today, on March 20th, we are happy to celebrate the 1st annual International Day of Happiness, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, following the conference on Happiness and Wellbeing.

“We need a new economic paradigm that recognizes the parity between the three pillars of sustainable development. Social, economic, and environmental well-being are indivisible. Together they define gross global happiness,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon highlighting the concept and the importance of including peoples' happiness into policy at all levels.

The stated aim of the UN International Day of Happiness is:

So how can you get involved?

A – Affirm the pledge. A simple act of adding your name to the thousands of others who have declared that they will “try to create more happiness in the world” around them.

C – Cheer ‘Happy Heroes’. Spreading the word on social network sites and paying tribute to those who go out of their way to make other people happy. Twitter users are encouraged to use the hashtag #HappyHeroes in their tweets.

T – Take part on the day. In addition to making others happy, there are numerous events going on around the world to celebrate the day! Do something, big or small, to take part on 20 March and bring happiness to others.
